First I would install the Convenient Effects module. Your spells have to be configured for DAE to trigger reactions with MidiQoL which is what CE does for a dozen or so very common spells and class features. Midi can reference CE when triggering certain reaction spells and Shield is probably the most common type of that at early levels.
