(It's the lights that you can control the brightness with by spinning the dome light switch.) They'll go off all of a sudden for a day or so, then just as sudden turn back on, only to repeat again.
There are two round knobs in the lower corners of the control panel. The button to the upper right of the lower-left knob is the fresh air, the button to the upper left of the lower-right knob is recirc. Try to hit the opposite that is lit up and check for the noise. When I had loose TC bolts, it had more of a deep knock sound that definitely seemed to come from the bottom end, but hard to determine where for sure.
