By far, the easiest way I know of to feed gems to the compressor is via conveyor belt leading right up to it. Can't drop them in from above unless the "lid" is bugged in a way I am unaware of. Since there is a water pipe in the conveyor already, the simplest way to get water to the compressor is to just hook into that, but the runner the lid …

If you send CUT Gems through, the Gem Compressor will combine each type of Gem separately, so you end up with Larger Emeralds, Larger Rubys, Larger Onyx, etc. and don't need to worry about sorting it out.
