Like Fox said, there are gold bars, coins and silver too in the chests around the shipwrecks on the main river and you can get gold by mining obsidian, butother than that I am pretty sure there were no minable gold deposits before and after the updates. #5.star metal and the obsidian bars are both a major pain to get really in their own ways.
