318 p218 no spark during crank. I picked up a low hour (401) 318. It does not have spark during crank, but as you let the key spring back to run it will fire. If you play with it, it will eventually catch and run indefinitely. I tried a known good switch I had and got the same result. I have the wiring schematic my local dealer printed for me.

The primary coil reading should be between 3.7 ohms and 4.6 ohms while the secondary (spark plug side) should be between 34.2 k-ohms and 41.6 k-ohms. If the resistance values you measure are outside of these ranges, you need to replace the coil. I'm having the same type of problem on a 318 with the P218G engine.

I always recommend to put a wood dowel down the cylinder (remove both plugs) and turn it over by hand (either from under the tractor or with engine removed) and mark the rod at the spot where the cylinder is the highest. Do both cylinders they should be the same.The 318 is a real workhorse, and we can suggest what is likely your ignition related root cause as this thread unfolds and we see more of your test results. The primary resistance of the coil is not the only thing to measure. The secondary of the coil could be opening up at temperature which is a known failure mode.Nov 6, 2020 · The connector (s) are under the battery tray, so the battery and tray must be removed in order to separate the connectors for inspection and cleaning. They could come apart hard so be mindful of that. Could have between 30 - 40 years of corrosion holding them together. Russ. Serial number of the tractor is C314L 19146LM. Took the points off and cleaned them. They were a little pitted so I filed them down to take the pitting out. Regapped them a little under .020". Was able to get a little spark when touching a screwdriver across the points. Tried a new spark plug but still no spark.

It looks like your jumper to 12 volts is done correctly -- so if the other terminal of the coil is getting switched up and down it should provide spark. Be sure you are testing the presence of spark correctly -- the Onan is a wasted spark style configuration and the two plugs are wired IN SERIES, so you need to ground the unobserved plug when viewing the other for spark intensity.

When I try to start the mower, it cranks fine but engine doesn’t start. When I took the air filter and the top of the carb off, there was gas in there.
