Also, to answer the question, the best melee weapons ingame in terms of raw damage are the long blade weapons (machete and katana). When it comes to durability nothing beats the crowbar (It also has a high knock down chance and good damage). Short blade weapons are heavily underestimated. Especially the hunting knife.

Short weapon types are generally too weak to serve as anything except a backup weapon, or unless you don't want to damage your strong weapons ...A spear can multi hit. Basically any weapon CAN multi-hit but you might have too literally be inside a zombie to hit another one. It definitely depends on the weapon.
