I think only melee weapons have sockets. At least, I have upgraded grenade launcher, flamethrower, plasma rifle & double barrel shotgun to level 3 and none have sockets. As far as I know, the best way to add damage is to raise the appropriate combat skills to level 3; i.e., taking "ranged weapons" to level 3 gives +30% damage. #3.
Requirements are easy to reach, because they are 59 str and 59 agi for top tier shotgun, and it is easy to level up stats till 60. When req are beyond 60, its 5 stat points per lvl, making weapon late game only. Every other weapons, top tier weapon has something like 90 stat requirements, witch is 3 time harder to reach.

With Albs, the lightning range (only ranged magic) is too short to replace a ranged weapon. And the best ranged weapon I could use at that time was a bow. So I ended up playing magic (fist + lightning) + bow for a while. Then I switched to magic (fist + lightning) + laser rifle. Then finally got to sword + magic (fist + lightning) + laser weapon.
