Doing a 408 conversion and need to know if I need a new crank. The "M" has a shorter stroke. I was told a while back that to use 400 pistons you have to use 400 rods because of the lengths between the 351M and 400 were different. But the same crank could be used as long as you change the pistons and rods. And when you consider using one of the readily available stroker cranks for the 351 (or even the 302) Fords, there's no reason to use the harder-to-package 400M engine.
