Great resource. I have an '86 JD 318. It is the "old style" Onan. I changed out the choke cable the other evening and after finishing, tried to start it. The choke works fine, but it acted like there was no spark. I bought a spark tester, the kind that allows you to hook it up to the plug wire and ground the other end.
Removed one and both spark plugs, placed against block, no spark noted. With spark plugs in engine, key in on position, placed ohm meter on positive and negative of the coil - reading is 17 ohms. Used jumper cable wires to go from positive battery terminal to positive terminal on coil - still won't fire.Serial number of the tractor is C314L 19146LM. Took the points off and cleaned them. They were a little pitted so I filed them down to take the pitting out. Regapped them a little under .020". Was able to get a little spark when touching a screwdriver across the points. This is especially critical with the wasted spark system as both plugs fire in series at the same time. Just because it is cheap, change the condenser and be sure it is on the + side of the coil, not the neg like a points system.
